Job Description:

Construction Estimating & Preconstruction Intern

Wyatt W. Underwood & Associates, LLC (WWUA) is seeking a motivated Construction Management, Construction Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related student to join our team as a Construction Estimating & Preconstruction Intern.

This is a paid, part-time position designed to provide hands-on experience in construction estimating, preconstruction, cost analysis, and public and commercial bidding. The intern will work with our estimating, project management, and business development teams on active California construction opportunities and projects.

Our construction work includes parks and recreation facilities, playground construction, safety surfacing, artificial and athletic turf, shade structures, site amenities, demolition, site development, concrete, and related specialty construction.

Responsibilities include:

  • Review construction drawings, specifications, bid documents, and addenda.
  • Perform quantity takeoffs from construction plans.
  • Assist in developing estimates for labor, materials, equipment, subcontractors, and other project costs.
  • Obtain and organize vendor and subcontractor quotations.
  • Prepare bid comparisons and scope-analysis worksheets.
  • Assist with California public-works and commercial construction bids.
  • Review project scopes for exclusions, conflicts, missing information, and potential cost impacts.
  • Assist with prevailing-wage labor calculations and other California public-works estimating requirements.
  • Assist with change-order and project cost estimating.
  • Maintain estimating files, cost information, and historical project data.
  • Coordinate with project managers, vendors, subcontractors, and internal team members.
  • Participate in estimate reviews and learn how projects progress from opportunity identification through bidding, contract award, construction, and closeout.

The position is primarily remote and is intended to work around the student's academic schedule. The successful candidate will receive direct exposure to real construction opportunities and will have the opportunity to assume increasing estimating responsibilities as their knowledge and experience develop.

Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Construction Management, Construction Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field. Candidates should have strong analytical and mathematical skills, attention to detail, organizational ability, and an interest in construction estimating and preconstruction.
  • Experience with construction plans, quantity takeoffs, Microsoft Excel, Bluebeam Revu, estimating software, construction scheduling, or previous construction internships is preferred but not required.

We are particularly interested in candidates who want to develop a career in construction estimating, preconstruction, project management, or construction operations.
