November 2023-

Cal Poly's Decathlon team has been chosen as a finalist for the Gateway Decathlon competition. Construction Management faculty members Maryam Kouhirostami and Elizabeth Adams are coaching an interdisciplinary team of students from the College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED) as they navigate the design and building of a prefabricated sustainable house.

The Gateway Decathlon is a two-year, design-build, multi-staged, multidisciplinary competition with a primary focus on innovative housing design and construction. This competition involves teams of students led by faculty members and industry partners collaborating on a project. The overarching goal is to foster creativity, innovation, and sustainable solutions, with a specific emphasis on industrialized or off-site residential construction methodologies.

The competition began with the announcement of the 16 selected teams in November 2023, followed by a one-year design process extending to the end of 2024. The second year of the competition is solely dedicated to the construction process. The proposed model by Cal Poly will be built and assembled on our campus, then disassembled and shipped to Saint Louis, Missouri, where it will be reassembled in a span of 2 to 3 days in October 2025. The location for the installation and exhibition of the final models is in downtown Saint Louis, Missouri, just south of the Gateway Arch. The competition comprises 10 contest areas, including Design, Engineering and Construction, Material and Supply Chain, Wellness and Livability, Energy and Performance, Dwelling Functionality, Water Optimization, Innovation, Market Viability, and Public Perception.
