Cal Poly Wins Bank of America Housing Challenge

For a second year in a row a Cal Poly San Luis Obispo team has won the Bank of American Housing Challenge, tying with UC Berkeley for first place. Last year's win prompted more students to join enabling Cal Poly to field two teams this year. The winning team was a multidisciplinary team involving students from Architecture, Business, City and Regional Planning, and Construction Management . Between the two teams, there were two graduate and 15 undergraduate students. The winning proposal was ALERE, a project in Inglewood CA partnering with Path Ventures, a non profit active in the LA Area. See ALERE Here.

Cal Poly Construction Management Students Win Top Honors at National Competition

SAN LUIS OBISPO – A group of Cal Poly construction management students captured second place at the recent 2012 National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) International Builders’ Show (IBS) in Orlando, Fla.
Team members included California residents Kevin Downing, a senior from Fullerton; Andrew Yu, a senior from Burlingame; Alexson Lim, a senior from Long Beach; and Kevin Niu and Blake Finkle, both seniors from San Jose; as well as Jeff Miller, a senior from Valparaiso, Ind.
A total of 36 teams representing NAHB student chapters at universities from across the country participated in the Residential Construction Management Competition, a highlight of the International Builders' Show. The competition gives students the opportunity to apply skills learned in the classroom to a real construction problem by completing a land acquisition proposal. Teams complete a management project and submit it to construction company executives who act as judges. During the convention students defend their projects to a panel of judges in front of an audience.
Cal Poly's proposal included market research and sales strategy, product design, green building initiatives, land development, estimates, schedules, and a financial analysis. This year Cal Poly was selected to present their solution a second time on the show floor at the IBS Live event.

"Entrada Ranch" Wins Bank of America’s Low-Income Housing Challenge

An interdisciplinary team of Cal Poly students took first place in Bank of America’s Low-Income Housing Challenge, beating out master’s degree students from UC Berkeley and UC Irvine in the final round.
The 12 student team combined students from business and finance, city and regional planning, landscape architecture and our own construction management student, Enrique Ivers (pictured at the bottom far right). The Bank of America challenge required student teams to develop concepts, designs, community support and financing for housing projects that are affordable for low-income households.
The winning Cal Poly entry, entitled "Entrada Ranch", was presented to the San Luis Obispo's Planning Council as a viable project for the community.

BUILDSmart Trailer Pitches Camp at the CIC
In celebration of Cal Poly's Open House, the Emerging Green Professionals (EGP) club has displayed the BuildSmart trailer in the Construction Innovations Center's plaza. This 14 foot trailer is home to over 25 examples of sustainable buiding products that showcase eco friendly alternatives to traditional building materials. Examples include insulation made of denim, paperless recycled-content drywall, recycled glass tile flooring, dual-flush toilet and a reclaimed water irrigation vault.

Professor Receives Regional Award at ASC Conference
Professor Scott Kelting was the recipient of the Associated Schools of Construction's Region 6&7 Regional Excellence Teaching award. The Regional Excellence Teaching award is made annually to untenured faculty, with two to six years of teaching experience at an ASC member school. This award recognizes the faculty member's contribution to construction education, excellence in teaching, and dedication to the construction profession.

Cal Poly Places in Six Divisions at Annual ASC Region 6 & 7 Conference
This year, Construction Management's entries in the regional ASC competition grew to encompass twelve teams. With the help of generous sponsors, a total of ninety-six students traveled by bus to Sparks, NV, to compete in the four day event. NAHB Brings Home First Place in National Competition

This year, Cal Poly Construction Management students placed first in the National Association of Homebuilders annual competition in Orlando, Florida. The team worked on developing their proposal throughout fall quarter and presented it at the International Builder’s Show in Orlando. The team spent countless weekends and holidays working on the project and even flew to North Carolina for a site visit. This year’s project focused on the development of a model home and sales office complex for a semi-custom and custom home builder in Yadkin County, North Carolina. The team created a hypothetical investment proposal and business plan which included market research on feasibility, marketing and sales, project design, green building, project management, cost estimating, construction schedule and a ten year financial analysis.
Team member Michael Stone summarized the competition experience by saying “The Residential Construction Management Competition (RCMC) is a great professional experience. Through the RCMC, we get exposure to the real world, how to put together a proposal and work as a team. The RCMC is a far different experience than we can get in a classroom.” Michael goes on to say, “[In the end] the proposal became a great learning experience for everyone involved.”
The NAHB team brought back a commemorative plaque as well as the NAHB traveling trophy. Both awards can be seen on display in the Construction Management Department, Building 186-A100.

Simpson Strong-Tie Materials Demonstration Lab Christened with First “Hands-On” Activity

Wednesday, January 19th, Professor Scott Kelting of the Construction Management Department, held a class framing exercise utilizing the Simpson Strong-Tie Materials Demonstration Lab. Each team received the same set of plans but three teams were given special customized floor framing kits from Hayward Lumber while the other three teams were given traditional lumber that required measuring and cutting. The large open floor of the lab gave each team ample room to construct their frame, so there was no crowded feeling or fighting over space. This type of large scale activity is only the first of many planned to take place over the next months, and the Simpson Strong-Tie Materials Demonstration Lab is more than ready.
Emily Pool, a Construction Management major, had this to say about the event, "I thought the hands on experience that we got during the floor framing exercise was better than almost anything that would could have done in a classroom. Not only did we gain knowledge of some new framing technology but we also gained respect for the people in the field that are doing framing day-to-day."
The CM department would like to specially thank Rudi Lockhart with Hayward Lumber and both Curt Nierman and Gene Franks with Weyerhaeuser for their donation of time and materials.

Impromptu LEED Team Dominates ASC Region 2
This year Cal Poly's Construction Management Department was invited to compete in the ASC Region 2 LEED competition held in Birmingham, Alabama. The six member team had only a month and a half to assemble and prepare for the competition. Despite the short time frame, CM's LEED team brought home a first place trophy, $3500 in prize money and recognition in yet another division.

Building and Rebuilding the World

Simpson Strong-Tie Materials Demonstration Lab Ribbon Cutting
Cal Poly hosted a dedication and open house for the Simpson Strong-Tie Materials Demonstration Lab last Friday, October 22 at 4:30 p.m. The privately funded laboratory is the final component of a multi-year project for the College of Architecture and Environmental Design. Ribbon Cutting for Simpson Strong-Tie
Materials Demonstration Lab Planned
The Simpson Strong-Tie Materials Demonstration Laboratory will be dedicated Friday, October, 22. When complete, it will be the largest element in the College's Construction Innovations Center which opened in Fall 2008. Students in several disciplines will be able to use the 5,000-square-foot lab to design, build and test a variety of structural components. The Simpson Strong-Tie Materials Demonstration Lab will provide vital support for activities of four adjoining labs in the center, where students will gain hands-on experience with fundamentals of construction management and with residential, commercial and heavy/civil construction.

CM Students Place High in
National Association of Home Builder’s Competition
Cal Poly Construction Management continues to build on their reputation for excellence. Construction Management students from Cal Poly recently placed sixth out of 39 four-year level teams at the National Association of Home Builder’s (NAHB) Residential Construction Management Competition in Las Vegas.
The annual competition gives student teams the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to address construction-related problems by working to resolve a construction issue and come up with a workable plan of action to present to a panel of expert judges. This was the tenth year that a team from Cal Poly participated in the competition.
Scott Kelting, the team’s coach and professor in Cal Poly Construction Management, received one of two awards for Outstanding Junior Faculty of the Year at the NAHB Student Chapters Awards Ceremony.

Cal Poly Recognizes Simpson Strong-Tie
with Naming of Materials Laboratory
Cal Poly recognized a critical partnership with a longtime supporter recently by the naming of the Simpson Strong-Tie Materials Demonstration Laboratory in the new Construction Innovations Center. The facility is part of the College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED), which includes the Architecture, Architectural Engineering, Construction Management, Landscape Architecture, and City and Regional Planning Departments. The naming follows a generous donation of $500,000 by Simpson Strong-Tie to help fund the laboratory.
The Simpson Strong-Tie Materials Demonstration Laboratory will be the largest element in the Construction Innovations Center. The Materials Demonstration Lab will provide vital support for activities of four adjoining labs in the center, where students will gain hands-on experience with fundamentals of construction management and with residential, commercial and heavy/civil construction.
"We at Cal Poly are proud of our long-standing partnership with Simpson Strong-Tie," President Warren J. Baker said at the CSU Board of Trustees meeting. "For many years, the company has generously provided resources and support to the College of Architecture and Environmental Design and funded scholarships for future professionals."

Since the founding of Simpson Strong-Tie in 1956 by the five original employees, the company has grown to more than 2,000 employees. DBIA National Conference in Washington DC
The CCCE took 12 students from the Construction Management, Architecture and Landscape Architecture departments to the DBIA National Conference.
