CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT STUDENT CLUBS 2007-2008

 

                ASCM (Associated Students in Construction Management)

The club provides both professional and social activities for a large number of Construction Management majors.

While the majority of the members are juniors and seniors, underclassmen find the group to advantageous for meeting other students as well as an avenue for acquainting themselves with the construction industry.

Professional activities such as films, slide presentations, guest speakers and service projects introduce students to different aspects of the building industry.

The club also provides opportunities for social interaction among the members of the department for both students and faculty members.  The club is responsible for organizing the CM Department golf tournaments, barbecues, intramural sports activities, and various other events.  The club actively pursues involvement in functions throughout the campus and community.

The Associated Students of Construction Management (ASCM) offers the opportunity to learn and be involved in the construction management profession, to network and develop relationships with potential employers, and meet fellow students.  There are approximately 170 members currently in ASCM.  The student chapter upholds the ideals and standards of two sponsoring organizations, Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) and Associated General Contractors (AGC), and shares the same principle of skill, integrity, honor and responsibility.

              DBIA (Design Build Institute of America Student Chapter)

The DBIA Student Chapter has approximately 25 members representing several disciplines including Architecture, Architectural Engineering, Engineering, and Construction Management.  This is an organization specifically oriented toward students with a career interest in the area of design build project delivery systems.  The club entertains guest speakers and promotes collaborative learning between diciplines.

The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) was founded in 1993 to promote single source projectdelivery embraces architecture, engineering, and construction services under a single contract, thereby integrating the roles of designer and constructor.  DBIA members practitioners from all project phases as well as property ownersfrom the public and private sector.

The DBIA Student Chapter is a professional organization of students from all disiplines (College of Architectural and Environmental Design, College of Engineering, College of Business) that focuses on designing and building the envirnment in which we live.  These unique students students work to develop their knowledge and skills through a collaborative process and to further integrate their interdisciplinary relationships with the professional world.

          NAHB (National Association of Home Builders Student Chapter)

The NAHB Student Chapter has approximately 15 members who have a career interest in resential construction.  The club's main activity during the year is participation in the NAHB student competition.  Thirty-four schools compete in this national competition.  Cal Poly's NAHB took first place in 2005 and 2006.

The national Association of Home Builders (NAHB) is a trade organization based in Washington, D.C.  Its mission is to enhance the climate for housing and the building industry as well as providing and expanding opportunities for all consumers to have safe, decent, and affordable housing.

NAHB is a federation of more than 800 state and local associations.  About one-third of NAHB's 225,000 members are home builders and/or remodelers.  Additional members are associates working in closely-related fields within the housing industry: mortgage finance and building products and services.

Any student interested in home building, real estate, land development, housing issues, building materials, etc., may join NAHB.

                                 SLX (Sigma Lambda Chi, Phi Chapter)

Sigma Lambda Chi is a national honorary construction society that recognizes academic excellence in Construction Students.  Membership is determined by GPA.  Only the top 20 percent are invited to participate in the SLX initation each fall.  Objectives for SLX include the rendering of service to the field of construction, the development of good relations among academia, industry, and the public, and the recognition of outstanding professionals in construction and allied fields.

                MCAA (Mechanical Contractors Association of America)

The Mechanical Contractors Association of America, Inc. is a vibrant, growing association of approximately 2,300 mechanical, plumbing, and service contractors.  Members enjoy MCAA's outstanding education programs, an expanding catalog of recources to help them manage and grow their businesses, periodicals and a website to keep them informed and connected, and business services to save them money.

MCAA's student chapter (10 Members) gives students the opportunity to learn about the industry by attending regular meetings with their MCAA local affiliate sponsers, taking field trips to a variety of jobsites and facilities, working together on volunteer projects, participating in fundraising events.  In addition, Cal Poly's MCCA students participate each year in a national competition.  The MCAA team took first place in 2007.

                                         CBF (College Based Fees)

The size of the group is approximately seven people.  It consists of students from all grade levels in the construction management department.

CBF is involved in using the money that students pay through college based fees to support activities, learning experiences, field trips, supplies and equipment within the CM department.  The decisions made are a collaborative effort between students and faculty.
