Minors

A number of minors are offered within the College of Architecture and Environmental Design for those students seeking to compliment or bolster their undergraduate major. The Construction Management Department offers the Construction Management Minor, the Integrated Project Delivery Minor, and the Real Property Development Minor (in conjunction with the City and Regional Planning Department). In addition, there are two other minors within the CAED: the Sustainable Environments Minor and the Architectural Engineering Minor. Information about these programs, including required classes, application procedure, and whom to contact with questions can be found below.

Construction Management Minor

Download CM Minor Application

The Construction Management Minor provides students with an introduction to the body of knowledge expected of persons pursuing careers in the construction industry. This minor will give a student a competitive edge when applying for certain jobs by providing concepts, tools and skills for a career in one of the professions involved in the built environment.

The Construction Management Minor is recommended for majors in Architecture, Architectural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. Enrollment in the minor is limited and selection will be made based upon the applicant’s performance in his or her major courses. Applications are available in the Construction Management office (21-245) and should be submitted and approved by the Department before pursuing any CM minor courses.

Integrated Project Delivery Minor

Download IPD Minor Application

This minor is offered by the Construction Management Department, and is specific and intentional in its design. It is intended to provide an “interdisciplinary” understanding of the design and construction process. It is designed to serve students that will be engaged in the A/E/C industry and be involved in integrated services project delivery.

CORE COURSES (21 units)

COMS 301 Business & Professional Communication (4)
CM/CRP 315 Fiscal & Project Feasibility (4)
CM/EDES 430 Collaborative Process (3)
CM/EDES 431 Integrated Project Services (3)
CM 432 Design-Build Project Management (3)
IT 454 Facilities Development (4)

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS (9 units)

• Construction Management students must complete 9 units of advisor approved DESIGN courses. These courses may be selected from any of the Design Discipline departments within the CAED—Architecture, Architectural Engineering, Landscape Architecture, or City &
Regional Planning. (These courses are in addition to design courses which are required for the CM major.)

• Other CAED students must complete 9 units of Construction Management courses as follows:
CM 364 Project Administration (3)
CM 452 Project Controls (3)
CM 454 Building Estimating (3)

• Non-CAED students must complete 9 units of advisor approved Design and/or Construction Management courses. Each case will be considered independently. For example, a Civil Engineering student is a non-CAED student, however, they are majoring in what would be considered a “design discipline” and therefore would be required to complete 9 units on the construction side in order to provide the balance needed to understand the integrated approach to project delivery.

Total Units Required - 30
